‘Taleo’ is the Lao word for the bamboo talismans placed above doorways and on village gates to protect homes and families from spirits. We chose Taleo Handmade as our name because we want to echo the protective spirit of the ‘taleo’ and support the preservation of community-specific textile traditions.
All our designs are crafted from authentic, handmade textiles created by women in villages. They're made with natural materials and traditional techniques.
Taleo Handmade embraces all Fair Trade principles and practices.
Yes! Our artisans work in harmony with nature to create handwoven, naturally-dyed textiles that are free of harmful commercial chemicals. We use natural dyes for everything except embroidery threads which the artisans buy in local markets in Vietnam.
We have relationships with women in Vietnam’s Black Hmong, Red Flower Hmong, and Black Flower Hmong communities. In Laos, we work with Tai Lue, Phou Tai, Hmong, Khmu, Katu, and Lanten people. Click here to learn more about our partners and their craft traditions.
